I just happened to be flipping through one of my favorite magazines and I decided I’d like to pay homage to it on this Travel Tuesday. I’m always shocked by the number of people who are unfamiliar with Garden & Gun because I think it is the only publication that covers all aspects of Southern culture from food, music, and travel to sporting life, fashion and the arts. While magazines like Southern Living and Country Living focus on the South as well, Garden & Gun differentiates itself by turning its attention to the lesser known artisans, chefs, and community leaders that are really making a difference in the South.
As I’ve noted in past posts, one of the reasons I started this blog was because I consider myself to be a Southern woman and I’d like to help shine a light on all of the great things about this region of America. More importantly, as a black woman, it’s very important to me to highlight all of the progressions made down South. That said, in an attempt to be as transparent as possible, I will document personal experiences where it seems the South has not progressed as much as I’d like to think. In my life thus far, the Southeastern United States has provided me with nothing but the kindest people I’ve ever met, delicious food, endless culture and a history that is far too interesting to be left up to interpretation by someone else. I want you to experience the South for yourself!
Here’s where Garden & Gun can help. I consider myself to be a bit of a Southern culture connoisseur yet I have learned so much from this publication. Beyond delicious recipes from iconic restaurants and legendary hole-in-the-wall joints, Garden & Gun has turned me on to Southern women redefining the term Southern Belle, where to get my gun engraved, and how to take a road trip. Additionally, I think G&G features some of the best photography in the biz. Check out a few of my favorite covers below as well as some great articles.
